Goon: skimboarding with a punk attitude

"Goon" is an eccentric full-length skimboarding movie about the history and life of a group of flatland riders from Sacramento, California.

With a raw style, a punk attitude, and a no-fear approach to rails and obstacles, the Goon-schism is taking over the skimboarding community.

"It's been over two years in the making. Get ready for the heaviest inland skimboarding film ever to be released with hijinks that can only be expected from Sacramento's finest skim crew. Get hyped," announced the Californian collective.

Skimboarding: there's nothing like riding our custom shaped skimboard | Photo: John Lemieux

Professional skimboards are works of art, science and design. But you don't necessarily need an high-end skimboard to shred and have fun. Let's learn how to shape a skimboard.

The good news is that producing your own skimboard isn't expensive. With a couple of phone calls, you will get all tools and equipment you need to cut the leaf and ride it.

If you want to shape a skimboard, start by doing it with wood materials. They're easy to cut, sand, glue and paint. A wood plank is also relatively cheap, especially if you visit a large do-it-yourself store.

The 2015 Zap Amateur World Championships of Skimboarding crowned thirteen riders at Dewey Beach, Delaware.

It's one of the most important competitions of the skimboarding season. There were contestants from all over the United States and, fortunately, the sun and the waves came along.

The event, organized by Zap Skimboards and Skim USA, kicked off with cold temperatures, onshore winds and shifting skies. Despite the tricky weather conditions, skimboarders performed their best shove-its to impress the judges.

On the final and decisive day of competition, the sun showed up, and the swell allowed for spectacular performances. In the end, thirteen men and women, boys and girls raised their trophies.

The 2015 Amateur World Championships of Skimboarding also debuted a new competition: the Silly Human Team Challenge, which included a pie eating contest, a three-legged race, egg spoon race and an egg toss. Team Zap took home the beautifully, hand painted parrot trophy.

Brad Domke: barreled on a skimboard

Brad Domke is one of the coolest wave riders in the world. The creative skimboarder traveled to Hawaii to test his board transfer technique.

It was his last day on Oahu's North Shore, and there were a few barrels coming in. With videographer Dylan Palmer and cinematographer Erik Ippel in the water, Domke had to give everything he had.

The final result is quite impressive, especially in high resolution (1080p). Brad's tube rides, shove its, ollies, and 360s only confirm the endless opportunities presented by skimboarding.

Skimboarding master Brad Domke has ridden an insane wave at Teahupoo, in Tahiti.

He is not the first skimboarder to tackle the infamous Tahitian reef break. A few years ago, Bill "Beaker" Bryan got towed into a few Teahupoo bombs.

However, it seems like Brad Domke has taken the skimboarding game one step forward. The wave rider from Wabasso, Florida, completed the triple crown of big waves. After claiming Puerto Escondido and The Right, Domke confirms his spot in the elite stage with a dream run at Teahupoo.

Skimboarding: know where to ride | Photo: Exile Skimboards

The world has plenty of high-quality skimboarding beaches and slick terrains for wave enthusiasts and flatland riders. Discover what makes a skimming spot really special. And remember: skimboarding is harder than it looks.

Skimboarders are picky, but there are good reasons for carefully selecting the right conditions and the ideal breaks. If you live on the coastline, there are certain variables to take into consideration: swell, the wind, tide, rocks, crowd factor and steepness of the beach.

Flatland skimmers have to deal with slightly different issues when picking a spot to ride. The quality of the sand and the amount of water available on the surface are the fundamental conditions.

Sam Stinnett and Keiao Bucasas have been crowned the 2015 United Skim Tour champions.

All riders knew that the last event of the season would decide who the best skimboarder in the world is right now. For the 11th Annual Exile Oktoberfest Skimboard Contest, only Stinnett, Blair Conklin and Austin Keen were in the world title race.

However, Conklin and Keen had to win the event and hope Stinnett didn't reach the final stages of the competition. Unfortunately for the duo, the rankings leader kept his composure and finished runner-up.

Although the wave conditions were far from perfect, you can actually confirm how good Gerardo Valencia handles the power of the ocean. Precision, power, flow, and intelligent wave management.

Austin Keen: chasing a side wash dream

Austin Keen is one of the coolest skimboarders on the planet. He has won world titles, but he also has an acute appetite for chasing hidden shore breaks. And Keen found a new one.

The iconic dreadlocked rider started catching his first waves in Tybee Island, Georgia, but he now lives in California. Austin Keen is rarely quiet. He is always on the move.

Tony Bianchi, the founder of ToeKnee Media, has been following Austin's "skurfing" journeys along the coast. This time, they found a secret side wave, somewhere in the Los Angeles County.

Brotherhood: Daniel Prieß and Friedrich Flüh let skimboarding do the talking | Photo: DB Skimboards

Flatland skimboarders of the world, rejoice! DB Skimboards has announced the release of the nine-minute short movie "Brotherhood."

It's bigger and better than a classic homemade video clip. "Brotherhood" is a collection of skimboarding stunts by Daniel Prieß and Friedrich Flüh, and it was shot in more locations and with a wider variety of moves in mind.

Flatland skimming is certainly underrated, and it often falls off the radar. But it offers many opportunities. It can be practiced in lakes, rivers, shallow pools, puddles, and streams. You don't need necessarily need waves or oceans to ride a skimboard.

Tom Curren has gone surfing with Brad Domke... on a bodyboard. The three-time (1985, 1986, 1990) world champion from Santa Barbara keeps breaking all wave riding preconceptions.

The iconic surfer-musician has his own agenda. Curren doesn't care what people might think when he paddles out on bodyboards and skimboards wearing out-of-fashion surf apparel. The American has nothing to prove.

Bodyboarders - and especially stand-up bodyboarding enthusiasts - will love it. Tom Curren joined big wave skimboarding master Brad Domke on a different surf session in Playa San Diego, Oaxaca, México.

Brad Domke has already checked in at the world's most dangerous surf breaks - Puerto Escondido, Teahupoo, The Right, and Nazaré. The most popular wave rider from Wabasso Beach, Florida, had one last spot left to tick - Jaws/Peahi.

Surfboards, windsurf boards, bodyboards, and kiteboards. Jaws has seen all sorts of boards being ridden in XXL conditions. But in the Maui history books, you couldn't find a skimboard.

Uncooked, real and striking. Daniel Prieß, one of the most talented riders of the flatland skimboarding scene, has released his "Raw Files," a collection of action sequences that didn't make into "Brotherhood."

At 24, Prieß - or Priess - has a large canvas to work with. The German skimboarder from Scharbeutz is constantly traveling the world with his board. And he never forgets to bring the video camera.

In "Brotherhood," flatland skimming's most important film of the decade, Prieß, Friedrich Flüh, and friends showed why they don't need oceans and waves to elevate the sport. Additionally, the "Raw Files" prove that "flatlanders" are keeping the skimboarding spirit intact and alive.

For many, he's the one who is pushing the sport forward, in a make-or-break time for skimboarding. Keen is clearly focused on highlighting new angles and maneuvers, while blending a free surfing agenda with the competitive calendar.
